home information walks and talks events herbs links contact home welcome to the website of christine herbert i am a herbalist, iridologist and allergy therapist working in norfolk, uk since 1997. i am a member, and past council member, of the association of master herbalists (mamh), and co-edit our professional journal. i am also an associate member of the british naturopathic association. together with three other herbalist friends, i organised the annual gathering for herbalists and herbal students - herbfest www.herbfestuk.co.uk for seven years. previously i worked as a biomedical scientist for the nhs for 18 years in haematology where i gained a fellowship of the institute of biomedical sciences (fibms). i also worked for the citizens advice bureau for a few years, and completed a bachelor of arts degree in environmental studies (bahons). i have completed studies in flower remedy therapy which i add to treatment where appropriate, and have studied ayurvedic (indian) and traditional chinese herbal medicine. i gained a diploma in allergy therapy in 2004 with the british institute of allergy and environmental therapy and have found this aspect of therapy to be very useful for most of my clients. currently i practise mostly from home, seeing clients at my home based clinic where i also have an extensive herbal dispensary to hand. i have found my therapies to be very effective in treating many health problems, especially those related to the digestive tract and to hormonal problems, however i have yet to find a health problem that cannot at least be eased. many of the herbs i use are very easily grown in this country as i tend to prefer native herbs. the herbs i buy are from reputable companies who care about their products and are, wherever possible, organic or even biodynamically grown herbal medicine herbal medicine is the oldest form of medicine. the herbs that i use have been tried and tested for centuries and many are the subject of modern research as more people turn to herbal medicine. i qualified as a western herbalist in 1997, and also use elements of ayurvedic and traditional chinese herbal medicine in my work. i have a background of 20 years as a biomedical scientist with the nhs. natural healing and naturopathy this involves changing dietary habits, lifestyle or environment, which may have caused illness. this will give the body the best possible conditions so that it can heal itself. detoxification and cleansing are very important to the natural healing process; these are achieved with the help of herbs and diet and are processes that most of us need to go through in order to heal ourselves. allergy testing i use applied kinesiology (muscle testing), a painless, non invasive technique, to test for sensitivity to foods and other substances which may be causing health problems. if any sensitivities are found then your diet should be modified to remove these. this is far easier than trying elimination diets. also specialised homoeopathic potencies of the substances can be prescribed to desensitise you. iridology as an iridologist i can gain further insight into problems by determining any potential or actual weakness of your body. these show up in the iris of your eye and may be inherited or they may have developed due, for example, to an inappropriate diet. used together, herbal medicine and naturopathy are very effective. instead of simply treating symptoms they address the cause, ensuring that illness does not recur or present itself in a different form. for example, if you have painful and stiff joints i will treat your symptom, but i will also look at what caused it and treat it accordingly; i treat the whole person, not just the disease, as everybody is unique. you have to work too! the biggest problem that many people find with herbal medicine and natural healing is that they have to play an active role in their return to wellness. modern medicine can disempower us by taking control and ‘doing’ things to us. to regain real health (mental and physical) it is important that we regain control and take responsibility for ourselves. consultation when you initially come for a consultation it will take 1 – 1 1/2 hours, and i will ask you about your diet, lifestyle and medical history. you will need to bring with you a 3-4 day diary detailing all food and drink taken, and including all supplements and medication. all information will be treated in the strictest confidence. subsequent visits will probably only need to be a half hour. the outcome of a consultation will be an individual plan of healing which will comprehensively cover diet, natural healing and a herbal prescription. herbs the herbs i use are either organically grown or collected from unpolluted places in the wild wherever possible. i grow some of the herbs myself, so i know that they have been grown, harvested and prepared in the best possible way to maintain their potency. i supply herbs either as a tea, a tincture, or as powders, which can be put into vegecapsules. tinctures are alcohol based - to preserve the herbs. what kind of problems can be helped? nearly all health problems can be helped because my aim is to provide your body with the correct conditions so that it can heal itself. however i find that hormonal problems, digestive problems, and problems relating to immunity, stress and fatigue lend themselves particularly well to herbal medicine. many people find that herbal medicine and natural healing can help them to regain full health. member of the association of master herbalists and the british institute for allergy and environmental therapy, and associate member of the general naturopathic council. © christine herbert 2004-18. site by norwich digital .
